Astronomically High Tide

The astronomically high tide (something like 10.8') combined with a storm off of the coast have combined to fill the cove to overflowing. Nothing new, it washes off a lot of the granite that makes up the breakwater and surrounding walls.

I started this blog last April with an entry about the USCGC Willow. Earlier this week she returned for an overnight anchorage in Ipswich Bay. It was nice to see her return.

Kayaker's Paradise

Winter kayaker on Lanes Cove
This area of the world has been called a kayaker's paradise, and I agree. Discovery Adventures launches out of Lanes Cove practically every day in the summer, along with many, many other kayakers. Last year a group came down in dry suits during the late fall and practiced rolling their kayaks, helping each other get back in and bailing them out. It was pretty interesting.

This year we haven't seen the low temperatures we did last year. There was a fair amount of ice in the cove last year and some pretty nasty storms, but this year has been pretty calm. Ron Parnell finally moved his lobster boat out of the cove a week or two ago, so the cove is completely empty.

Just before heading out this morning, I noticed someone getting ready for a little paddle. The seas were calm, but it was snowing a bit. I guess if you are going out on a day like today, this truly must be a kayaker's paradise.
